Phyllis M. Delisi

Phyllis Mathews Schalk Delisi, born on 10/27/1946 into an unsuspecting world and adopted by Leonard and Eileen Schalk, was a true force of nature. Despite wrestling with childhood maladies and eyesight that could make a mole's vision look crystal clear, her petite stature concealed a potent mix of sharp intellect and an expansive spirit. Her professional journey was as eclectic as her personality, ranging from tending bar at a biker joint to managing a gas station and working at a home for adults with developmental disabilities. Though seemingly disparate, these roles shared a common thread—Phyllis' unwavering curiosity about people and her desire to lend a helping hand in whatever way she could. Just as diverse as her career were her hobbies and interests. A remarkable freehand artist, specializing in capturing the essence of horses, it was a marvel for her children to witness a blank canvas transform into a vibrant, almost breathing masterpiece. Her musical tastes mirrored this diversity, evolving from the likes of Ricky Nelson and Elvis in her youth to a fondness for '60s and '70s rock and roll. However, as she aged, a touch of country, particularly Willie Nelson, found its way into her life, occasionally to the mild dismay of her children when the tunes blared loudly from the vintage record/8-track wooden stereo system early on a weekend morning. True to her roots, Phyllis also had an affection for the finer things in life, especially when it came to jewelry. Her quirky love affair with budget bling was yet another facet of her colorful persona. She'd wear those sparkly treasures with pride, proving that you don't need a hefty price tag to shine bright like a diamond. And, of course, she harbored an unbridled love for cowboy boots and horses, regardless of how many times they both led to her taking a tumble; Graceful in spirt she was, but not always in the physical realm. Phyllis leaves behind a legacy carried on by her five children, two foster children, and an ever-growing tribe of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her influence persists in the smiles, love, wit, and perhaps a touch of glitter from that cherished inexpensive jewelry, even if her tuna casserole might not be missed quite as much. A memorial service will be held on Thursday November 30, 2023 at 4:00pm with visitation from 2:00pm until time of service, at the Jowett Funeral Home-57737 Gratiot, New Haven.
