Craig "Doc" Benning

Craig "Doc" Benning, age 87, of Port Huron, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 16, 2019, on Father’s Day, in his home, with his daughter by his side after a short illness. He was born on February 16, 1932, in Orrville, Alabama, to the late Joseph and Lillie (Moncrief) Benning. Craig went to school in Orrville, Alabama; he started working at New Haven Foundry January 5, 1953 and worked until the closing. He enjoyed fishing, playing checkers with his family, baseball and his favorite hobby of all was going to the horse racetrack with his loving cousin, Joe Moncrief. Craig was a strong, kind, gentle man who was loved by all who came in contact with him. He loved walking down by the St. Clair river for he believed that there was healing in the water. He never complained about being sick and he fought his best fight with cancer until the end. He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter, Cinder McCrory with her daughters, Destinee McCrory; her kids great grand, Aadam Cooper, Antione McCrory; Mrs. Thailer (Tyvon) Thomas; great grand’s Jamichael, Jaionnah and Janiylah born June 14, 2019 of Port Huron; son, Bryan (Betty) Cook of Southfield; his son, Bryan Lee (LaGina) Cook of West Bloomfield, great grand’s Bryan L. Cook II and Andrew Cook; deceased son, Terrence Cook with his kids, daughter, Chantale (Rashim) Evans of Detroit, grandkids, Andre Brown, his daughter, great great-grand Naahii Whiteye, Courtney Hereford, Justin Brown, Ashley Brown, her daughter great great-grand Aries Evan born June 13, 2019; sons, Julien Moore of London and Jacob Moore of Ireland. Brothers, Frank Benning, Calvin (Ann) Benning, Eugene (Dorothy) Benning of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joseph Benning of Erie, Pennsylvania; sisters, Jessie Pettway of New Orleans, Louisiana, Marie (Roosevelt) Johnson, Minnie (Bobie) Jones of Port Huron, Savannah Bivins of Columbus, Ohio, Leezora Benning, Lillie Benning of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; very special friends and family that always spent time with Craig, Pierre Rogers, Jimmy Wade, Donald McCullough, Dino Johnson, brother-in-law, Roosevelt Johnson, Bessie Moncrief, Calvin Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Craig was preceded in death by his son, Terrance Cook, brothers, Abra Benning, Silas Benning and sisters, Elizabeth Blackman, Louise Bolar. Memorial services will be 12:00pm Thursday, June 27, 2019, in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Avenue, Port Huron. Reverend Carl Miller will officiate. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 11:00am until the time of service at 12:00pm in the funeral home.
