Robert Wishart

Robert (Bob) Johnstone Wishart, of Washington Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 13, 2025. His wife of 62 years, Mary L. Wishart, was by his side. He was 82 years old. Bob was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1943. He was the only son of Robert and Gudrun Wishart. As a boy, Bob enjoyed spending time on his uncle’s farm in Michigan’s upper peninsula. He graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in 1962. He married the love of his life, Mary, in 1963 and they had 2 children. Christopher was born in 1964, and Rebecca was born in 1966. During the early years, Bob worked for multiple job shops as a draftsman. In 1969 he went to work for General Motors. Thirty years later he retired from GM as a Senior Project Engineer for the BOC (Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac) division. Without a formal college education, this was a great accomplishment which demonstrated his level of intelligence and ability. After retirement, Bob lived out the remainder of his years doing things that he loved. A great source of pride was the home that he provided for his family on Harsen’s Island. The small cottage on the south Channel was purchased in 1984. In the early 2000’s Bob designed and oversaw the building of a beautiful home that served as a wonderful retreat and gathering place for everyone who came to visit. Everyone was welcome there. Bob loved being with friends and family, and the island offered a unique opportunity to enjoy time there together. Bob was a great teller of long stories, especially around a bonfire. He enjoyed laughing, and sometimes serious debating, but always held to a “glass half full” point of view. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and just about anything that had a social element to it. He was thrilled when he became the grandfather of two beautiful girls. Mary was born in 1997, and Allison was born in 2000. Despite living in another state, they have countless memories of time spent with their grandfather as visits were frequent and good. Allison was married in June of 2024. In August of this year Bob’s great-grandson was born. He was so pleased to have met Michael just two weeks ago. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Wishart, son, Christopher (Anne) Wishart, daughter, Rebecca (Ken) Alteri, granddaughters, Mary Aylaian and Allison (Tony) Zolt, along with great grandson Michael Zolt. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gudrun Wishart and his three sisters, Roberta, Rose and Joyce. Any contributions can be made in Bob’s name to a charity of your choice.
