Mary F. O'Connell

Mary O’Connell (née Dodge) January 11, 1936 – April 13, 2025 Mary O’Connell, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted member of every community she called home, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at Angela Hospice in Livonia, Michigan, at the age of 89. Mary was born on January 11, 1936, to Ethel (Hamilton) and Earnest Dodge. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings James, Helen, and Doris Ann; her first husband, Ed O’Connell; and her second husband, Gerald Snyder. Mary is survived by her loving brother, Eugene, and her five daughters, each of whom carries on her legacy of strength and care: Anna O’Connell (Doug Houseman), Maureen McLean (Bud), Cindy Fleming (Todd), Sharon Cunningham (Andy), and Peggy Schroth (Dennis). She also leaves behind 11 cherished grandchildren, 10 adored great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from Mercy College of Detroit with a degree in nursing, and while raising her family in Livonia, Michigan, she immersed herself in civic life. She was an active member of the Livonia Jaycees, proudly served as president and on the board of directors of the Theatre Guild of Livonia Redford, and a girl scout leader and GSUSA Neighborhood Chair and First Aid Trainer. After moving to Plymouth, she continued to share her talents and enthusiasm through community groups such as the local garden club. A woman of remarkable creativity and skill, Mary founded Memories by Mary, a custom wedding dress business that she operated from her home. Her artistry and attention to detail made countless brides' dreams come true. Upon retirement, Mary and Ed settled in Port Orange, Florida, where her deep faith continued to guide her. She lovingly sewed baptismal bibs and decorations for her parish, embodying the spirit of service in all she did. Mary was a devoted caregiver to Ed until his passing, and later found joy and companionship again with Gerald and his family, with whom she shared happy years before his death. In her final chapter, Mary faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s with grace, supported every step of the way by the devoted care of her daughters. Surrounded by love, she was given comfort, dignity, and peace in her final years. Mary's legacy is one of warmth, generosity, faith, and fierce devotion to family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
