Lois R. Spitzbarth

Lois R. Spitzbarth died peacefully on March 27, 2026 whilst being cared for at the Blue Water Hospice in Marysville, MI. She had gall bladder surgery in February and suffered various complications afterward which she was ultimately unable to overcome. She was a kind, loyal, smart and classy lady that will be deeply missed by those that knew her. Lois was born in Detroit in 1928. Her father James Phypers Davis emigrated to Detroit from Canada in 1923. Her mother Anna May (Grundy) was originally from Ireland and emigrated to Detroit shortly after James having first lived in Canada for a number of years. They both moved to Detroit to pursue the American Dream and to get married having first met in Toronto. Lois and her younger brother Donald had a happy care-free childhood living on the east side of Detroit. She attended Denby High School where she had a very active social life with many friends. Several of those friendships would last for many decades. Also, at Denby in the mid-40's she met the love of her life Fritz Spitzbarth. They were married on the 15th of September 1951 and would remain together for 65 years until his death in 2017. Lois and Fritz decided to wait to start a family and instead chose to both work for a number of years in order to achieve financial stability as well as get accustomed to married life. Lois worked for Gemmer Manufacturing Corporation during these years which was the same company where her father ultimately worked. At Gemmer, she was involved with managing inventory and processing orders destined for Auto assembly plants in Michigan and other states. Lois and Fritz eventually had children. Robert James born in 1957 and then John Arthur born in 1959. They built a beautiful life together for themselves and their two sons. Lois was active in the boy's elementary school and social activities through the PTA, Little League with Robert, and music lessons with John. Lois' sons both went on to University and then to have successful careers but always prioritized being at home with their parents during important holidays. Lois and Fritz eventually moved to Lexington Michigan to be on Lake Huron and then ultimately to East China Michigan on the Saint Clair River. Whilst in Lexington, their annual St. Patrick's Day party and Octoberfest event were legendary. Frequent car excursions throughout Michigan and Ontario were always on the agenda for them. They also enjoyed travel further afield throughout the US and Canada, and also Europe, Australia, and South America. Lois was always good working with numbers and obtained her associate's degree in accounting from Wayne County Community College in the 1980's. She subsequently worked at various accounting/bookkeeping positions. Whilst Lois and Fritz never had any grandchildren of their own, they took great interest in the children and grandchildren of their many friends by attending so many weddings, showers, graduations, and birthday parties. Lois is survived by her son John as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout North America and in Europe. She was pre-deceased by her parents James and Anna May Davis, her brother Donald and his wife and young daughter, and her son Robert. There will be no funeral service. However, those wishing to honor Lois are encouraged to do so by donating to her favorite charity St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements in care of Jowett Funeral Home, Port Huron.
