Larry Joe Brady age 86, of Shelby Twp., passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, Born on October 17, 1939, in Danville, Illinois, Larry spent more than seventy years calling Metro Detroit's east side home, where he built a life defined by friendship, resilience, generosity, and service to others. Larry graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and enjoyed a successful career in sales and marketing. His work introduced him to countless people, but it was his larger-than-life personality that left the lasting impression. Standing tall with a commanding voice, infectious smile, and unmistakable charisma, Larry had a gift for making everyone feel like an old friend. Whether you met him at a local restaurant, on a golf course, or simply spotted him around town in his favorite Cadillac, chances are you remembered him. He treasured the friendships he made throughout his life and remained fiercely loyal to those he loved. Family, friends, and even strangers were often touched by his generosity, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Larry's life was marked by extraordinary perseverance. A twenty-year survivor of both throat and lung cancer, he faced every challenge with courage, determination, and an unwavering will to keep moving forward. His resilience inspired everyone fortunate enough to know him. Although he didn't discover golf until the age of 50, Larry embraced the game with remarkable passion and dedication. Through countless hours of practice and determination, he became an accomplished, ultra-low handicap player. His achievements included winning the GAM Senior Amateur Championship, along with numerous club championships, local tournaments, and the friendly money matches he so thoroughly enjoyed. Golf became far more than a pastime—it became one of the great joys of his life and a place where many lifelong friendships were forged. Yet Larry measured his greatest achievement not by trophies, but by transformation. His proudest personal accomplishment was achieving and maintaining more than forty years of sobriety. Through his active involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, Larry became a mentor, sponsor, and source of hope for countless individuals seeking recovery. His compassion, honesty, and unwavering support changed lives, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond his own journey. Those whose paths crossed in his recovery know the profound impact of his encouragement and example. Larry proudly served his country as a helicopter aircrewman in the United States Navy for four years. His commitment to service remained evident throughout his life in his dedication to family, his friendships, and his willingness to help others whenever he could. Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Patricia M. Brady; his stepchildren, Jeffrey C. Sands (Elizabeth) and Pamela A. Sands; his cherished grandchildren, Samantha L. Sands (Brian), Jeffrey "Colton" Sands, Katherine E. Sands, and Gabriella M. Sands; great-grandchild; Cooper Richards, his brother, David Michael Brady (Pat); and his nephews, Brian Brady (Rupa) and Darren Brady (Elizabeth) and grandnephews; Devin and Brooks Brady. He was born to Mary Margaret Engelbrecht and Joseph Robert Duley and was later lovingly raised by his legal parents, David R. Brady and Mary Margaret Engelbrecht and proceeding in death by his sister, Christie A. Brady. Larry's family and friends will remember him for his unwavering strength, quick wit, generous heart, enduring friendships, and remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome. His life reminds us that true success is measured not only by personal accomplishments, but by the lives we touch, the friendships we nurture, and the hope we give to others. A Celebration of Larry's Life will be held on October 2026, with details to be announced. In honor of his service in the United States Navy, Larry will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. His presence was unmistakable, his friendships genuine, and his legacy enduring. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
