Mr. FJ Smith

Mr. FJ “Smitty” Smith, age 89, of Fort Gratiot, passed away on August 18, 2012, in the Blue Water Hospice Home in Marysville, with his family by his side, following a sudden illness. FJ was born on April 23, 1923, in Croswell, one of four children of Martha Smith. FJ graduated from Port Huron High School and served 3 years in the U.S. Navy, during WWII, assigned to the USS Alger (De101). He was proud of his service in the Navy and enjoyed sharing stories of those days with his family. FJ retired from AT & T, after 48 ½ years of service. He was also a lifetime member of the Charles A. Hammond American Legion Post 8, Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 and Port Huron Loyal Order of Moose. Through the years, FJ enjoyed antique cars, traveling, playing with his dogs, spending time with his family and Detroit Tigers baseball. For many years, he could be found enjoying meals with his Coney family at Mama Vicki’s Coney Island in Fort Gratiot. He was a gentle and kind man, with a wonderful sense of humor and zest for life, who made friends everywhere he went. He will be forever cherished and admired by his loving family and friends. FJ is survived by his love of 32 years, wife, Marcy Jacobs-Smith, 6 children; Craig (Linda) Smith of Asheville, NC, Vicki Smith of Rochester, NH, Jan Smith (Paul Fletcher) of Port Huron, Scott (Denise) Smith of Port Huron, Nita (Ron) Akred of Kimball, and Chris Jacobs of Port Huron, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, who will remember his as Papa, sister; Helen (Carl) Galimore of Cocoa Beach, FL, and a brother; Ivan Smith of Port Huron. The family would like to give special recognition to their neighboring friends; Duane and Trish Michaels and Mike, Lori, and Ryan Johnson, for all their help and support. FJ is preceded in death by his mother; Martha Smith, grandson; Craig (CJ) Smith, sister; Eleanor Lorriane Smith and his first wife; Doris (Harbron) Smith. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Jowett Funeral Home – 1624 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St., Port Huron. The reverend John Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, from 2:00pm until 8:00pm and on Thursday from 10:00am until time of service. Pallbearers will be; Zachary Smith, Nathan Brock, Matthew Smith, Cole Bowers, Jesse Bowers and Jeremy Bowers. In recognition of the wonderful care FJ received in his finals days, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial tributes be made to: Blue Water Hospice Home, patient care, 2795 Edison Drive, Marysville, MI 48040.
